- For the Birds: A Guide to the Best Birding in Kimberley | Tourism Kimberley
For the Birds: A Guide to the Best Birding in Kimberley With plenty of sunshine, a moderate climate, and many lakes, rivers and streams to enjoy, Kimberley is a good place to be for bird species and bird-watchers alike. Come in the warmer months to take in the cacophony of birds that call our forests, our waterways and our meadows home. Or, come in the colder months to view the many different species of birds that choose to winter here. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, any birder or budding ornithologist is sure to soar into plenty of feathered fun. Psstt… be sure to bring your binoculars, and don’t forget to look up. The BC Bird Trail You’ve likely heard about the Powder Highway and the BC Ale Trail , but have you heard about the BC Bird Trail ? The BC Bird Trail is a celebration of the expansive bird-watching opportunities in British Columbia, and a guide to discovering birding, conservation, and community within BC. Proudly a part of the Columbia Valley BC Bird Trail, Kimberley is a bird-watcher’s mecca, with over 100 different species of birds and year-round opportunities to bird-watch and make memories. Birding can be done at one of our 3 established trail networks or at the Marysville Falls & Eco Park. Species you can expect to see here include everything from blue jays and song sparrows, to house finches and american robins. Tip: For more information on the BC Bird Trail, be sure to check out their website . There, you can learn more about the BC Bird Trail initiative, and dive a little deeper into the bird-watching magic that can be found along the Columbia Valley Bird Trail. The Birds of the Kimberley Nature Park Here in Kimberley, we’re home to the largest urban park in British Columbia, which boasts over 800 hectares of forested land on the eastern slopes of the Purcell Mountains. The Kimberley Nature Park is home to 97 different species of birds, and acts as the perfect year-round basecamp for birders to enjoy. Of the 97 species of birds that call the Nature Park home, approximately 25 bird species reside here year-round. Birds to view in the winter here include woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, grouse, grosbeaks, and crossbills. Our spring and summer birds tend to begin their migration back to town in late March, with the arrival of the varied thrush and the winter wren. Later on in April, ruby-crowned kinglets and sapsuckers add their distinctive rhythms to the soundtrack of the Nature Park, while warblers and mallards also opt to join the party. By late May, our last migrant from South America, the swainson's thrush, add their own flute-like songs to the park. With over 50km of established trails to wander, the Kimberley Nature Park is a great place to start any birding adventure. Off the Beaten Bird Path For those looking to get off the beaten trail, Kimberley’s waterways and further-out birding areas offer a diversity of bird species and landscapes alike. For the perfect further-out birding itinerary, start your day on the shores of St. Mary Lake and the St. Mary River, 20 km west of Kimberley. Bohemian waxwings, american goldfinch, and black-capped chickadees like to play along the shorelines of both St. Mary Lake and St. Mary River, while keen-eyed birders might be lucky enough to spot the northern pygmy owl or the golden-crowned kinglet in the nearby forests Next, head north out of Kimberley to discover the shores of the Kootenay River and the bird species that frequent the marshy lands there. Expect to see larger, migratory birds and waterfowl here, such as Canada geese, great blue heron, osprey and eagles Following your trip to the Kootenay River, continue along Highway 93/95 to discover the Elizabeth Lake Wildlife Sanctuary at the southwest end of Cranbrook BC. Elizabeth Lake is a 6 hectare wildlife reserve consisting of wetlands, grasslands, a lake and a forest. This area is one of only two known locations in Canada where the dione copper butterfly can be viewed, and is home to many migratory bird species, such as the spotted sandpiper, the horned grebe, and the yellow-headed blackbird The Bird’s the Word As part of the BC Bird Trail, Kimberley is a birders’ true delight. Come winter, spring, summer, or fall, and discover why our home is shared with many diverse, feathered friends. Looking for more? Birding isn't the only activity to fill your time whilst in Kimberley. Check out some of our other curated itineraires , which give insight into the many varied experiences that can be enjoyed here. - Bully For You: A “Reely” Good Place to go Fishing | Tourism Kimberley
Bully For You: A “Reely” Good Place to go Fishing Any fisher will tell you that a day on the water is always better than a day in the office. We couldn’t agree more. Here in Kimberley, fishing culture runs deep through our community. With world-class dry fly fishing in the Canadian Rockies and Purcell Mountains, plus enough natural lakes nearby to please trout-trollers and boat-powered anglers, we’re a perfect place to cast away and reel on. Go Guided Kimberley Fly Fishing has a fly shop in town that doubles as a hub for fish chatter and all things angling. With over 25 years of expertise, this crew is made up of in-the-know locals who grew up on our waterways and are dedicated to preserving and sharing the truly special fishing to be had here. Kimberley Fly Fishing offers guided fishing trips on the beautiful surrounding rivers and lakes, such as the crystal-clear freestone waters of the St. Mary River and the historic Kootenay River. Plus, the team at Kimberley Fly Fishing has all the gear needed to tackle the waters and get you hooked on Kimberley’s Cutthroat. Eager to gain a little more fishing know-how? Add a lesson into your guided trip to brush up on your casting technique and learn how to read the water with ease. Wake Up to Wild Bulls Each fall, the fisherfolk here go ‘steer’ crazy. Specifically, they really go ‘bull’ crazy, as the famed Bull Trout splash back into town and reinhabit the local rivers. These migratory fish return each September, and bless the waterways with feisty spirits and trophy sizes that can reach up to or over 30 inches. For the full Bull experience, check out Kimberley Fly Fishing’s overnight camping trips, where guests sleep in wall tents along the shoreline and cast into first light. Nature, water, and wild trout are a powerful combination here. Go on Your Own It’s easy. Pick up your BC Fishing License and any needed fishing supplies at Bavarian Home Hardware in Kimberley’s Platzl. Then, plan for a ‘fish-nic’ by grabbing organic goodies, tasty sandwiches and freshly-baked treats from Stoke Market. Don’t forget to swing by Grist and Mash Brewery or Overtime Beer Works for a growler or bottled samples of their finest brews, and put them on ice while you’re at it. These will come in handy after a long day on the water. Our suggestion for easy fishing access? Head South to St. Mary’s Lake Road, turn into the Kimberley Riverside Campground and follow the road down to the river for fly-fishing and river-wading on the St. Mary River. Or, head 17km North out of town and make a left turn off the highway to enjoy easy trout-trolling on Hahas Lake. Rules for the Reels As with every wet endeavour, caution is needed when navigating through our waterways. The rocks along our rivers can be very slippery, and currents move quickly during the spring freshet. Take your time to show respect to Kimberley’s waters by practicing leave-no-trace principles, and ensure that you’re up-to-date on all the local fishing regulations . Come to discover West Slope Cutthroat and wily Bull Trout on our rivers, then stay a little longer to reel in trophy Pennask Rainbow Trout on our many lakes. Looking to fish year-round? Come back to enjoy ice fishing and cool casts in the wintertime. In addition to offering daily and multi-day trips on Kimberley waterways in the warmer months, Kimberley Fly Fishing also offers guided lake ice-fishing tours through the chillier months. About Powder Matt: A self-proclaimed ski bum and story wrangler, Powder Matt is also a strong advocate for getting outdoors and soaking up all of Kimberley’s history and hidden gems. We may be a little biassed, but this place has it all: a mini putt course that all ages will love, an outdoor swimming pool, immediate access to kilometres of hiking and biking trails in the Kimberley Nature Park, private sites to accommodate both RV and tent campers, glamping tents for those seeking a little more luxury, and an Adventure Centre that offers e-bike, SUP and kayak rentals. Plus, as the name suggests, this spot is located along the picturesque banks of the St. Mary River, and is the perfect homebase for further-out adventures in the surrounding Purcell Mountains. Provincial Parks Here in Kimberley, we’re lucky to be within a short driving distance to many Provincial Parks. Each of these Parks offers the perfect escape into nature, while still being close enough to town to experience all of Kimberley’s perks. Set up camp at any of our surrounding Provincial Parks, then day-trip it back to town to shop our artisanal stores, head underground on the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway, nosh on delicious foods or sip craft beers, and peruse art at the many galleries peppered throughout our downtown core. When the day is done, make the short drive back to your Park of choice, and tuck into a chill night under the stars. Families love Wasa Lake Provincial Park , which offers easy access to sandy beaches and warm waters, and the added bonus of ice-cream shops to enjoy and paved paths to ride along Lake-lovers choose to rest their heads at Premier Lake Provincial Park . About a 40 minute drive from downtown Kimberley, Premier Lake offers close access to 6 separate lakes, crystal-clear waters, hiking trails, and a family-friendly dock to chill out on Norbury Lake Provincial Park is for those looking for crisp, cold waters and towering Rocky Mountain views. This spot is close to the historic Fort Steele Heritage Town, and is also a short drive to some of our favourite backcountry hiking spots like Tanglefoot Lake Our furthest-away option, White Swan Lake Provincial Park offers a true escape into nature. As it is about a 1 hour drive from downtown Kimberley, be sure to stock up on groceries, goodies, and gear in our downtown core before heading out Rec Sites & Private Campgrounds Aside from the many Provincial Parks in the area, there are also a handful of nearby Rec Sites and comfortable Private Campgrounds to enjoy. These spots range from bare-bone tenting pads, to full hook-up lots that are perfect for your roomy Fifth Wheel. All of these campgrounds are within a 40 minutes drive from downtown Kimberley. A perfect spot for those seeking adventure and adrenaline on their stay here, the Bootleg Mountain Rec Site offers easy access to many downhill mountain biking and hiking trails. Aside from a pit toilet, firepit, and a couple of picnic tables, amenities here are sparse. Bring your tent or self-contained travel trailer, and don’t forget to follow Leave No Trace principles while here Head 20 km from downtown Kimberley to find the cozy campsites at Hahas Lake Recreation Site . This is a great place to enjoy the warm, shallow waters of the lake, head out on an evening paddle, or wake up to fish for trout along the shores. All of the sites here are rustic, and not suitable for those looking for a full-hookup camping experience Another rustic campground on the shores of a beautiful, mountain lake is the campground at Lazy Lake . This is one of our favourite local lakes for rope-swinging, paddling, and fishing, and the sites all offer great views from the north end of the lake Fort Steele Resort & RV Park is a great year-round camping option for those looking to tent, RV, or spend the night in a comfy cabin. The Park is directly across the road from Fort Steele Heritage Town, and is nearby to many hiking, paddling, and fishing spots The St. Eugene RV Park is located within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation, and is an ideal place for anyone looking for dramatic views of iconic Fisher Peak, close proximity to the St. Mary River, and a vacation filled with golf rounds, gambling and good eats at the 3 on-site restaurants. Long-term stays are available for those looking to kick back and relax a little longer Backcountry Adventures Surrounded by two unique mountain ranges and established trails in every direction, our front and backyards are great places to adventure and explore on foot. Though there are many backcountry camping options to enjoy here, some of our recent favourites include the family-friendly hike into Top of the World Provincial Park , the picturesque tenting spots at Bear Lake , and the mountain-top shelter at Lakit Lookout . Please be aware that our backcountry camping spots are first-come-first-served, and are often user-maintained. It is important to practice Leave No Trace Principles while backcountry camping, take proper safety precautions before heading out, and be mindful of surrounding wildlife and other users out enjoying the trails. Finishing Touches In need of some last minute backcountry or camping equipment? Head to our local outdoor shop, Purcell Outdoors , to stock up on gear and goodies, then pop over to the Kimberley Visitor Centre to grab maps, apps and driving directions to your next favourite campsite. Whether you opt to sweat with locals, or prefer your own private oasis, a day spent immersing in hot and cold therapy with Kamu Sauna is a day well-spent. Make Waves The Kimberley Aquatic Centre is a beloved part of the community, and a great way to spend a winter afternoon or a quiet rainy day. Head to the slopes and glide into the first day of your winter vacation here. The Kimberley Alpine Resort is full of family-friendly and approachable runs, plus more challenging terrain for older kids and more daring parents. Learning to ski? No problem! The Mountain offers Snow School Lessons to guide you safely through a day on the slopes All proper ski days include a hearty lunch of something deep-fried, and a hot beverage to wash it all down with. Head to the Stemwinder Bar & Grill for poutine or waffle fries, and don’t forget to ask for extra whip on that hot chocolate - you have more skiing ahead of you, champ Ski passes can be purchased at the Ticket Window or online After a full day on the hill, stick close to the Mountain and enjoy casual family dining at Buckhorn & Main Mountain Eatery. Save some room after dinner, folks, because your night isn’t quite over yet. When the longest lit run in North America is at your fingertips, you go night skiing. Be sure to bundle up, and keep an eye on the many stars shining bright overhead Day 2: Slide On your second day here, get ready to rip, grip and reach new heights. Grab a thermos full of hot chocolate and grab n’ go goodies from The Beantree Cafe, before picking up a sled from Bavarian Home Hardware. Next, head to the Kimberley Nature Park to spend the morning ripping down some of the best tobogganing hills you’ve ever seen. Our choice? Hit the slopes between Ponderosa Trail and Patterson Ridge, or branch up into the Trickle Creek Golf Resort to bomb down the snow-covered greens Alternative: sledding not your thing? Try the Trickle Creek “S’mores” Fat Bike Tour offered through the Kimberley Alpine Resort. Each tour includes a few hours of fat biking through Kimberley’s winter wonderland, plus some post-bike fire-side relaxing with hot drinks and tasty s’mores After a morning spent in Kimberley’s snowscape, fill your afternoon with hot holds and great heights at Spirit Rock Climbing Centre . Spirit Rock is a great addition to any family’s holiday here, and offers After School youth programs, private one-on-one instructing, and Kids Rock Holiday Camps. For parents who want to drop the kids off at a lesson and branch out on their own, head across the street for craft beers and cheer at Overtime Brewery Tonight, head to a BBQ dinner at The Shed. Picky palettes? You’re safe here. The Shed’s got a kid’s-specific menu with fan-favourites such as the little smokers and tater tots. Plus, we hear the mac n’ cheese can win over just about any picky eater. Don’t forget to get your fill of late-night sweets from La Lune de Chocolate Candy Shoppe, and browse the creative toys and games at Treehouse Toys before dinner Day 3: Stride Wake up with Mickey Mouse pancakes at Our Place Restaurant, then strap on some ice skates and stride your way into your third and final day here. To stick indoors, head to Kimberley’s Civic Centre to skate where the Kimberley Dynamiters play. To head outdoors, bundle up and get ready for a game of pick-up hockey with the local crowd at a neighbourhood ice rink. Find outdoor rinks in the neighbourhoods of Townsite and Marysville, as well as at Swan Park and Garden Park Note: Skate rentals are available through the Rental Shop at the Kimberley Alpine Resort Dreaming of frozen lakes and more off-the-beaten-path skating options? Make the short drive out to Wasa Lake Provincial Park for beautiful views of the Canadian Rockies, and smooth ice along the frozen waters. Wasa Lake has a resident-maintained 3km path to skate on, plus a great outdoor rink at the Wasa Lions Grounds. While at the Lions Grounds, warm up next to the outdoor fire pit, and roast marshmallows in between games of shinny For your last night, get your fill of wood-fired pizza from Stonefire Pizzeria, or enjoy your pies back at home base with delivery from Domino's Bonus for hockey fans: Kimberley is home to its very own Junior B team, the Kimberley Dynamiters . The best way to wrap up a day skating is to cheer on the home team alongside the rest of the family While finding winter fun in Kimberley is as easy as pie, 3 days here are just the beginning. Plan for a few extra days to get familiar with your favourite runs at the Kimberley Alpine Resort, or save some time for fat biking and snow-shoeing. P.s. Don’t forget to plan for your summer return here. We hear there’s plenty of family fun to soak up in the summertime, too.
- Summer Itinerary: The Adventurer’s 3 Day Guide to Kimberley | Tourism Kimberley
View All Itineraries Summer Itinerary: The Adventurer’s 3 Day Guide to Kimberley Day 1: Ride Roll out your Kimberley adventure on two wheels. Kimberley is home to over 100km of trails, which vary from fast and flowy, to janky and jagged. Looking to rent a ride? Check out Bootleg Bike Co. and Black Dog Cycle & Ski. A biker’s true “Tour de Kimberley" lies in our Round the Mountain track. This 20km loop takes you through the Horsebarn Valley, the Kimberley Nature Park, and the Nordic Centre to give you a taste of Kimberley’s varied bike terrain. If 20km isn’t quite long enough, customize the loop by including Mr. Toad, Thunder Turkey, or Magic Line into the mix White-knuckle riders with a penchant for the steep, the rooted, and the rocky find nirvana at Bootleg Mountain. Shuttle laps are your best friend here, but a true suffer-fest aficionado can pedal the 12km to the top before a well-deserved whip to the bottom. Our faves? Try Purple People Pleaser for a machine-built flow, or Snow Mexican for a rough and ride ‘em way down. Download the Trailforks App for a comprehensive guide to bike trails in the area Don’t forget to fuel up throughout the day with grab n’ go snacks from Stoke Market, and round out your ride with post-bike beers. Fill up a growler or grab a patio spot at one of our local breweries, Overtime Beer Works and Grist & Mash, before noshing on elevated pub grub at the Pedal & Tap Day 2: Raft Splash into your second day in Kimberley with white water and wild rapids. Whether guided or self-guided, a day on the rougher waters of Kimberley is sure to keep the good times flowin’. The Kootenay Rafting Co. is your one-stop shop for half-day, full-day, or custom tours on Kimberley’s waterways. Simply bring your sunscreen, towel, and pursuit of a good time, and leave the rest up to the KRC crew For the do-it-yourself crowd, a long float or whitewater kayak on the St. Mary River is for you. Shuttle your vehicles between drop-off and pick-up spots, then hit the water to float on. Need a rental? The Kimberley Rafting Co. has rentals available for paddleboards, kayaks, rafts and canoes Tip: be sure to check the water levels before you put in, and pick up a copy of the Kootenay Rockies BC Backroads Mapbook to plan your whitewater route. The best days on rough waters start with a hearty breakfast and end with a little cheer. The Sullivan Pub has daily brunch for the 19+ crowd, and enough chow to keep you full all day long. Wrap up your day with Mexican-inspired grub and margaritas at the Burrito Grill, or head back to the “Sully” to finish your day where it started Day 3: Rise Came for our high-rises? Whoops, we’re fresh out of those. Good news, though, we’ve got plenty of other great heights to make up for it. Known for its elevation and proximity to alpine adventure, Kimberley is a good place for peak-bagging and altitude-seeking. For a longer day in the mountains, peak into the Purcells or trek through the Canadian Rockies. Kimberley’s backyard is home to the Purcell Mountains and great hikes like Pyramid Creek and Hourglass Lake, while our front yard boasts views of the Rocky Mountain Trench in rugged jaunts like Teepee Mountain or Tanglefoot Lake. Bring your bear spray and keep your eyes peeled for the elk, deer, moose, and marmots that frequent our mountains Tip: assets for hiking here include 4-wheel drive and a little know-how on gravel roads. Before you head out of town, stop by the Visitor Centre for all your map and direction needs. If you’d rather ditch the car and hike as you are, trek as the locals do up the old T-bar route at the Kimberley Alpine Resort . Our suggestion? Make it an early morning, and bring a thermos full of coffee to sip on while watching the sunrise over the Rockies. Then, take the long way down through Musseur’s Plateau and Moe’s Canyon before chilling out at Mark Creek or the St. Mary River for the afternoon Any day spent hiking starts requires a good amount of adventure fuel. Grab coffee and a quick breakfast at a Kimberley Cafe before rounding out your day with backyard BBQ and BC beers at The Shed. As a bonus, be sure to check out Purcell Outdoors and Arrow & Axe in the Platzl for all of your outdoor and adventure-seeking needs Eager for more? The bad news is, 3 days aren’t quite enough to soak up all of Kimberley’s adventurous spirit. The good news is, we don’t plan on going anywhere, and neither do our outdoor endeavours. Stay a few extra days to bank more trail-time and wet wiles, or set your sights on our chillier adventures and plan for your winter return.

- Summer Itinerary: A 3-Day, Laid Back and Leisurely Guide to Cruising Kimberley | Tourism Kimberley
Kimberley Explained: Our Mining and Town Glossary While our days of toiling underground have since passed, remnants from those years of hard labour can still be seen in our food and drink scene, on our ski slopes, and in the attractions that set us apart. From pizza joints to hard-working breweries, the legacy of the Sullivan Mine lives on here in Kimberley. Peruse some of the common Kimberley mining terms below, then see how many you can find during a visit here! "Sullivan" The Sullivan Mine was named after one of the 4 original mine founders: Walter Burchett, EC Smith, John Cleaver and Pat Sullivan. Today " The Sullivan Pub " is an iconic staple in downtown Kimberley and has been for nearly a century. The "Sully is a direct nod to our mining past, and a tasty reminder of our storied history. It's a place where locals meet for drinks with friends, and visitors discover hearty breakfasts, elevated pub grub, and enough creative cocktails to start any vacation off on the right foot. "Muck" Muck refers to ore or rock that has been broken by blasting. A “muck sample” is a representative piece of ore that is taken from a muck pile and then assayed to determine the grade of the pile. "Muckers” are the movers of that rock/muck and “hot muck” refers to burning ore. With plenty of tongue-in-cheek taglines and delicious meals to boot, find the term "mucky" at the Pedal & Tap . It's tagged as a place to #getmuckedup with friends and family and where guests can enjoy a heaping plate of loaded “Mucky Fries”. Yum. "Bootleg" A bootleg is the bottom part of a hole that is left after a blast. Bootlegs must be examined carefully to make sure that no explosive remains. One of the most iconic mountains in Kimberley’s backyard is Bootleg Mountain. This is where our downhill biking network lives, and where outdoor enthusiasts recreate all throughout the year. The term “bootleg” also shows up around town at one of our local bike shops, Bootleg Bike Co. , as well as at Bootleg Gap Golf , one of our 3 championship golf courses here in town. "Grubstake" Grubstake refers to supplies or funds loaned to a mining prospector, on the promise of a share in their discoveries. Mention the word “grubstake” in Kimberley, and locals will immediately assume you’re jonesing for a pizza. Grubstake Pizza has been a family-run establishment in Kimberley since the early ’90s and continues to be a favourite among locals and visitors today. "Cominco" After its initial discovery, the Sullivan Mine was acquired by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada (Cominco, a predecessor of Teck Resources Ltd). This company was one of the first in the world to commercialize “differential froth flotation”, a revolutionary process that made the recovery of zinc economical. Established in 1927, Cominco Gardens is a 5-hectare property that boasts over 45,000 flowers annually. During its operations, the Sullivan Mine began producing its own brand of fertilizer from ore by-products. The gardens were designed as a natural way to show off the effectiveness of that fertilizer while creating a space of beauty for residents and visitors to enjoy. "Jackpot" A jackpot refers to a particularly bad work area. Find your very own “bad work area” at the Kimberley Alpine Resort on runs like Jackpot and Jackpot Glades. Both of these runs are Black Diamonds and a decidedly bad place to try to and conduct a regular 9-to-5 (but don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss where you’re at). "Magma" Magma refers to the molten material deep in the Earth from which rocks are formed. Another mining term that shows up on our ski slopes, Magma is a Black Diamond ski run accessed off of the Easter chairlift at the Kimberley Alpine Resort. This run is best enjoyed with first-tracks on an epic powder day, or by anyone looking to tackle some steep moguls when conditions are firm. "Overtime" Overtime refers to time worked beyond one's scheduled working hours. The hard-working, tenacious grit that our mining ancestors instilled in our town can still be seen in our “honest, modest, hard-working beers” from Overtime Beer Works . Though we value a work-play balance a lot more these days, our favourite kind of overtime on any workday is the overtime that takes place with pals at Overtime Beer Works.
