- Kimberley BC: A Good Place To Après | Tourism Kimberley
Kimberley BC: A Good Place To Après Known for consistent Purcell powder, plenty of sunshine, and the longest lit night-skiing run in North America, Kimberley’s ski culture needs no introduction. Here’s the thing, however: true Kimberley ski aficionados know that the après-ski here is just as good as the expertly-groomed corduroy and the perfectly-spaced glades. Whether you like to après on a sun-soaked patio or a super-secret sun pit, prefer hand-crafted cocktails and BC brews at a downtown spot, or want to groove to live music with locals and visitors alike, the good times certainly don’t slow down once the chairlifts stop spinning. Our suggestion? Grab your crew and get ready to clink glasses to a day well-spent, and a night worth repeating. On-Mountain Après Stay close to the action with on-mountain après that you’ll be thinking of for many seasons to come. Picture family-friendly venues, lively seasonal events, and a whole lot of post-shred fun. The Stemwinder At the end of the ski day, all runs lead to The Stemwinder. The Stemwinder Bar & Grill is our on-mountain restaurant and bar, which serves up classic pub grub, family-friendly entrees, and delicious drinks. Ski down from the top of the mountain and directly to the outdoor patio, then enjoy a beer, an appy, and a rich hot chocolate there. We hear the Stemwinder hosts live music every weekend from 3-6pm, and makes the best basecamp to soak up fun, seasonal events like the season-ender Spring Splash, and the locals’ favourite Northstar Days. Buckhorn & Main Located next door to the Stemwinder in the Trickle Creek Lodge, Buckhorn & Main Mountain Eatery is another great option for a warm lunch, a tasty dinner, or some post-ski cheer. Come to enjoy steak-house favourites and saucy ribs, then stay for dessert and drinks while you take in the alpenglow over the Canadian Rockies. Sun-Pits & Summits Legend has it that the Kimberley Alpine Resort has its fair share of sun pits to enjoy. Keen observers who spend a little time exploring the top of the Mountain will be rewarded with glorious wintertime sunshine alongside in-the-know Kimberley folk there. Our best tip for finding our notorious sun pits? Befriend a local or two on the chairlifts, then get ready to soak in the good vibes and legendary sunshine with new friends and old. Near the top of the Northstar Quad Chair, you’ll also find the beloved Kootenay Haus. This is the best place to warm up and re-charge during a ski day, and a great place to sneak in a fun mountain-top event on the first Saturday of each month. New this year, the aptly-named Summit Saturdays are celebrating good food, great company, and the best Rocky Mountain views around. From 11am-3pm on the first Saturday of the month, enjoy your fill of BBQ, music, and top-notch mountain vibes there. In-Town Après After you’ve had your fill of on-mountain fun, grab the free ski shuttle from the base of the hill to enjoy a little cheer in our downtown core. Here in Kimberley, our craft breweries, pubs, and distillers are stirring up something special that hits all the right notes with the après crowd. Whether you sip in a spot that’s as local and fresh as you can get, or grab a growler of beer to take with you back to your basecamp, our hometown drinkeries are well-worth the addition to any après lineup. Overtime Beer Works Self-described as a comfortable spot that’s perfect for “polishing off pints, watching a game, or getting info from the locals,” Overtime Beer Works is a must-stop during any visit here. We hear that Overtime’s outdoor patio is the best spot in town to soak in our year-round sunshine, and comes equipped with an outdoor fire pit to keep you warm and cozy on powder days. The vibe is casual here - go ahead and roll up directly in your ski gear, then tuck into a made-in-Kimberley brew or two. Grist & Mash Brewery The tasty beers and rotating taps at Grist & Mash Brewery are an après favourite around here. We love pairing their craft brews with their yummy seasonal snack boards and the local art adorning the walls. Here during the mid-week? Don’t miss the popular Thursday night live music on the Pine Box Stage. Kimberley Brewing Company Our newest brewery, the Kimberley Brewery Company, is a little further out from our downtown core, but just as full of après fun. The taproom is located in The Porch restaurant, which makes Kimberley Brewing Co. the perfect stop-over for anyone staying at the Western Lodge. Sample the brewed-in-house beers here, and don’t forget to try out a few of their yummy menu items while you’re at it. Bohemian Spirits After savouring our suds, get ready to enjoy craft cocktails at our local distillery, Bohemian Spirits. This spot is the perfect place to sip a seasonal drink next to picturesque Mark Creek, while munching on charcuterie boards and mingling with new friends. Ask about the infamous Colossal Pink Gin or Vagabond Vodka, and, when in season, be sure to take in a cocktail that’s infused with their local Whitebark Pine Bitters. The Shed Beer & BBQ aren’t the only things on offer here. The Shed is a place to clink glasses with friends and learn the name of your bartender on night one. Guests are family here, and no matter which smoked meat, BC craft beer, or saucy sandwich you choose, a good time is always on the menu. Hot tip: weekend warriors would be remiss not to take in the legendary Sheddy Sunday Bingo here. We hear the taco platter special goes extra well with the off-side jokes and questionable bingo rhymes. The Sullivan Pub The Sullivan Pub has been a Kimberley institution for decades, and is still one of the best spots to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a whole lot of après libations in between. The menu here is big, the portions are generous, and the staff are fabulous. Come discover why “The Sully” continues to be a Kimberley après staple. Looking for more? Our town is jam-packed with great eats and local sips that are sure to satiate your cravings and curate the best vibe during any après mission and beyond. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our events calendar to make your stay even more festive, and be sure to come back throughout the rest of the year to discover why Kimberley is such a great place to visit in every season. - For the Love of Larch: Hiking through Kimberley’s Gilded Forests | Tourism Kimberley
For the Love of Larch: Hiking through Kimberley’s Gilded Forests Each fall, the hillsides around Kimberley explode in fiery, yellow splendour as our larch trees undergo their annual transformation. These golden trees are a quintessential highlight to any autumn visit here, and are best enjoyed on foot. Enjoy the extensive swath of Western Larch from the comfort of Kimberley’s city limits, or head to the mountains to get amongst one of the largest Subalpine Larch strands in North America. Whether you opt to stick close to town, or choose to hike up high into the Purcell or Rocky Mountains, you’re sure to find plenty of yellow larch roads to follow along the way. Did you know that all Larix species (Western and Alpine Larch included) are unique within the tree world for being both deciduous AND coniferous? Unlike other cone-bearing trees, Larch trees shed their needles each year before winter! Purcell Mountains A little birdie told us that the Purcell Mountains surrounding Kimberley have one of the highest concentrations of larch trees in the world. A wander through the hillsides here quickly confirms that the rumours are true: this place is the epitome of larch madness! From easy saunters, to scenic drives and challenging alpine excursions, there are plenty of golden views to take in while exploring our Purcells. Easier: We love weaving our way through the Horse Barn Valley Interpretive Forest each fall, to take in the bold colours, talus slopes, and stunning viewpoints there. Try striking out towards the Halfway Cabin or Dipper Lake. Then, meander towards the Tora Bora Ridge trail to enjoy autumn views of Bootleg Mountain and the St. Mary River valley. These trails are also suitable for mountain biking, and can accomodate adventurers of all ages More Difficult: For a more difficult day-hike in the Purcell Mountains, head up Meachan Creek FSR to tackle the fall-favourite Mt. Evans trail. While This 12km route is considered a challenging hike for most, the larch payoff is huge with yellow trees dotting the entire trail, and fall-soaked Purcell views to enjoy as far as the eye can see from up high Scenic Drive: For a scenic drive that makes the most of the fall colours in the Purcells, head to St. Mary Lake Regional Park and enjoy the abundant golden larches right from the shoreline Canadian Rockies While Rocky Mountain larches are well-known and much-admired in Alberta’s Bow Valley, larch madness is very much alive and well in the Southern Rockies, too. Expect quiet paths and uncrowded trailheads here, and adventures that are equally as beautiful as the more infamous larch hikes to the East. Easier: For an easier Rocky Mountain outing that is suitable for all ages, head north out of town to Premier Lake Provincial Park and partake in the Turtle-Yankee-Canuck Loop once there. We love this loop for the variety of flora found here, as well as the picturesque lakes spread out along the path. Both deciduous and coniferous trees flank the 6km loop, and Subalpine Larch can be spotted in the towering mountains above Option: Consider adding the Saddleback Ridge hike into your Premier Lake outing for a longer and more challenging hike. There are plenty of beautiful Subalpine Larch to enjoy along the trail and up at the saddle More Difficult: Head to the Mause Creek tarns and Tanglefoot Lake to make the most of fall’s splendour. While the hike into Tanglefoot Lake is beloved in the summer months too, something extra special happens when the colours here begin to shift come fall. Weave through picturesque tarns as you climb higher, and watch as the bright-yellow larch trees and colourful shrubbery get more striking as the trail goes on. The sparkling lake views are the cherry on top of an already great hike here Scenic Drive: While in the Rockies, take a drive to Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park and soak up the fall colours that line the waters of Whiteswan and Alces Lakes, and the Lussier River Right in Town Although the mountains surrounding Kimberley boast plenty of larch magic up high, there’s an abundance of golden wonder to be found within city-limits, too. The Centennial Trail at the Kimberley Nordic Club is a great option for all ages and fitness levels to enjoy. This 3km loop is also appropriate for mountain bikers, adaptive riders, and on-leash dogs. The Centennial loop guides you around the outer boundary of the Nordic Club and under towering larch trees that boast some of the best fall colours in town. We hear this is a favourite trail amongst locals and visitors alike The Lois Creek Trail system is a great option to explore later in the fall, once the subalpine larch have already lost their needles. We love the tried-and-true Tea Spot Loop for a longer day-hike or cruisy bike ride Tip: visit this trail network at “golden hour” for maximum larch magic Looking for an in-town hike with more of an uphill grind? Trek as the locals do up the old T-bar route at the Kimberley Alpine Resort and take in the bird’s-eye-view of Kimberley’s larches from the top of the ski hill. Make it an early morning, and bring a thermos full of coffee to sip on while watching the sun rise over the Rockies. Then, take the long way down through Musseur’s Plateau and Moe’s Canyon to enjoy more autumn colours along the way Before striking out on your chosen larch hike, be sure to familiarise yourself with all of our know-before-you-go suggestions, and stop by the Kimberley Visitor’s Centre for hard-copies of trail maps or detailed driving directions. Bonus: Keep an eye on the annual Kimberley Larch Festival , which takes place in town each autumn. This is a local photography contest that celebrates the mighty larch and all of its golden splendour in a series of fun categories. This event is a community favourite and is not to be missed! - Wildflowers of Kimberley: Smell the Flowers in Southeastern British Columbia | Tourism Kimberley
Wildflowers of Kimberley: Taking Time to Smell the Flowers in Southeastern British Columbia Each spring, the hillsides of Kimberley explode in fiery spectacles of colour as our many wildflower species begin their annual blossom. Aside from adding beauty to our community, wildflowers also provide essential ecological benefits to the environment. They help to both attract and provide habitats for pollinators, can improve soil health and water quality, and their root systems help to trap carbon, which aids in improving overall air condition. When planning your spring trip to Kimberley, be sure to include a wildflower wander or two into your itinerary. After all, taking time to smell the flowers is strongly encouraged here! Wildflower Wanders The best way to enjoy the wildflowers of Kimberley? Grab some sturdy shoes, get outside, and get amongst them! The Wycliffe Buttes "The Butte” is located in the Wycliffe Wildlife Corridor just south of Kimberley, and protects some of the most ecologically significant grasslands in the southern Rocky Mountain Trench. Early-season flowers to spot here include the bright-blue, bell-shaped Mertensia Longiflora , which begin to dot the landscape during the early spring melt. Most notably, this area is known for its early to mid-May explosion of Balsamroot , which covers the hillsides in a thick carpet of yellow. Aside from beautiful wildflowers, common sightings here include migrating elk herds, as well as threatened wildlife species such as the American badger. This 2.5 km out and back trail is perfect for all ages to tackle. The Kimberley Nature Park Aptly named for the sunflower-esque Balsamroot that explodes along the south-facing hillsides there each spring, Sunflower Hill is one of the most beloved spots in the Kimberley Nature Park to take in the brilliant wildflower wonder. Expect a sea of yellow to unfold each May, and don’t forget to take in the views of the Purcell Mountains and Canadian Rockies from the top of the trail.Though Sunflower Hill is perhaps the most popular spot to view flowers in the Park, the Kimberley Nature Park is home to nearly 200 different species of wildflowers, such as Glacier Lily , Spring Beauty , Blue Clematis , and Paintbrush . With over 50 km of established trails to enjoy in this multi-use park, the Kimberley Nature Park is the perfect place to spend an entire day discovering our beloved blossoms. Perry Creek Falls Those interested in chasing waterfalls during the magnificent spring freshet will also be rewarded with wildflower viewing amidst the watery landscape. For a short and sweet hike that the entire family will enjoy, head to Perry Creek Falls - a hidden waterfall south of Kimberley. Each spring, the trailsides here are dotted with wildflower species such as Balsamroot and Pentstemon . Hint: Word has it that Pentstemon has been used medicinally for centuries as a stomach remedy by the local Ktunaxa. Know Before You Go Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles while viewing wildflowers. Enjoy the beauty of the flowers, but leave them in the ground where you find them Tread lightly and keep to established trails to avoid damaging sensitive grasslands and encouraging the spread of invasive species like knapweed Consider learning about the medicinal roots and historical significance of local plants. The Ktunaxa Ethnobotany Handbook is a great resource to start with Be sure to head to the Kimberley Visitor Centre for all relevant trail maps, and don’t forget to freshen up your phone’s apps with tried-and-true favourites like Trailforks and AllTrails before heading out Learn as you go with apps such as the B.C. Wildflower App - this is a great resource to identify species with Last Words While May is generally the best time to view our various wildflower species, subalpine flowers tend to bloom later, anywhere from mid-June to late July and onwards. The bottom line? There is boundless wildflower beauty to discover here any time during the warmer months. We can’t wait for you to discover the wonder with us! Looking for more? - Fall Itinerary: 3 Days of Autumn Adventure-Seeking in Kimberley BC | Tourism Kimberley
View All Itineraries Fall Itinerary: 3 Days of Autumn Adventure-Seeking in Kimberley BC Day 1: Hike Fall into Kimberley’s autumn adventures by reaching new heights and taking in some of our famed “larch madness.” Grab a latte and a breakfast wrap the Timber Hitch before hitting the road. To explore the bursting, yellow larches of the Purcell Mountains, head for the hills to tackle local-favourite Hourglass Lake . This 6 km hike will take you up through forests of aspen trees, before reaching the refreshing, sub-alpine lake. Be sure to climb the scree slope at the far end of Hourglass Lake to reach Upper Hourglass Lake and take in the larch-speckled views from there For those who have their sights set on Rocky Mountain objectives, aim for a meandering wander through larch-smattered sub-alpine tarns to beloved Tanglefoot Lake . No matter which hike you choose, be sure to fill your pockets with plenty of to-go treats from Stoke Market to fuel you along the way Tip: assets for hiking here include a 4-wheel drive and a little know-how on gravel roads. Before you head out of town, stop by the Kimberley Visitor Centre for all your map and direction needs Finish off your first day in Kimberley with tapas and creative cocktails at the Hourglass Lounge . Kimberley’s newest cocktail bar offers a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, with fresh, seasonal cocktails and tasty small plates and appetizers Day 2: Bike Day two is for exploring Kimberley on two wheels. While we love biking here in any season, fall riding here just might be our favourite. Our suggestion? Set your sights on both a morning and an afternoon ride to make the most of our many trail networks and our over 100 km of established mountain biking trails. Today, start your day with a bigger breakfast to power your pedals by heading to the Deer Park Diner. While there, enjoy classic breakfast favourites and twists on the classics. Next, prepare for a true Kimberley tour of the town by tackling the 20km Round the Mountain (RTM) trail. This is a cross-country favourite, which circumvents the Kimberley Alpine Resort and winds its way through the Horsebarn Valley Interpretive Forest, the Kimberley Nature Park, and the Kimberley Nordic Club Hot tip: modify your RTM loop by adding in Mr. Toad, a feature-heavy Black run, or Thunder Turkey, a cruisy and fast Blue trail before cruising Army Road to Higgins Hill and rejoining the tail end of RTM there. If you know, you know After a midday refresh with a health-forward, light lunch at Mountain Grass Bistro, set your sights on an afternoon pedal or shuttle at Bootleg Mountain . This is Kimberley’s downhill-specific trail network and a must-bike for anyone looking for more challenging terrain and a little white-knuckle fun. Pedal the 12 km to the top and soak in the vibrant larch trees sprinkling the St. Mary Valley, or opt for shuttle laps with friends and enjoy the fun progression up the mountain from flow-tracks like Purple People Pleaser, to more steep and jump-heavy runs like Snow White and the Seven Wasps Keep the bike theme going by ending your second day here with elevated pub grub and BC beers at the Pedal & Tap in Kimberley’s downtown Platzl. While the menus here rotate seasonally, some fan-favourites like the Mucky Fries and Spaghetti Balls are a hit all year long. After dinner, head to Grist & Mash , our newest brewery, to enjoy locally-brewed suds and good cheer there Insider Tip: while autumn adventuring here, get ready to channel your inner Ansel Adams and snap a few larch shots. Each year, Kimberley hosts an annual Larch Fest , which awards local prizes to photographers who capture our beloved, golden trees Day 3: Soak After a few busy days on the go, reserve your final day in Kimberley for a little relaxation… with a side of adventure-seeking, of course. Day 3 is for getting hot and steamy in Kimberley’s surrounding backcountry. To start your day, head to Kimberley’s Platzl to grab a hot beverage, a homemade cinnamon bun, and some grab n’ go snacks from The Beantree Cafe or The Drift Cafe. Then, head north out of town to find the Lussier Hot Springs. Situated along the Lussier River, these springs are as picturesque as they are piping hot, and boast 360-degree views of the snow-capped Canadian Rockies Tip: As these springs can get busy, we suggest arriving in the early morning and saving plenty of time for additional adventures in the afternoon Following your early-morning soak, strike out for a hike and hot spring combination by checking out the Ram Creek Hot Springs. Following a short hike from the parking area, enjoy a series of natural pools with views of the Canadian Rockies towering high above. As these pools are lukewarm, they are best enjoyed in the afternoon, or during a warmer fall day Heads up: the drives to Lussier and Ram Creek Hot Springs follow rough, forest service roads without cell service along the way. 4x4 and high-clearance vehicles may be an asset After a day spent soaking, keep the warm spirit flowin’ with BC beers and BBQ at The Shed . This cozy pub and restaurant is a great place to bump elbows with locals and dig into house-smoked meats and classic comfort food side dishes. Bring a little heat with the Meat Sweats platter, and wash everything down with something local on tap or with a delicious bourbon-based cocktail. To wrap up your final night here, finish up your trip to Kimberley with a nightcap at our local distillery, Bohemian Spirits Wondering what other great adventures we have up our sleeves? While a 3-day visit is enough to get a taste of our adventurous spirit, there’s so much more to see and do here. Stay a few extra days to soak up more larch madness in our mountains, or to sneak a fall festival or event into the trip. For those eager to discover our other seasonal adventures, plan for a return trip in the winter , summer , or spring . Every time of year is a great time to adventure here

Afterwards, head a few doors down to the Hourglass Lounge for a nightcap or two in their intimate and comfortable establishment Day 3: Peaceful Pedals After a day spent relaxing and recharging, Day 3 is for reconnecting with our beautiful outdoor surroundings and enjoying some fresh spring air and sunshine. Begin your final day here by enjoying breakfast at the Sullivan Pub. The Rails to Trails pathway is suitable for all types of wheels and is appropriate for adaptive riders Tip: Mountain bike and e-bike rentals can be found in downtown Kimberley at our two wonderful bike shops: Black Dog Cycle & Ski and Bootleg Bike Co For those looking to glide away from our paved trails and head deeper into the Purcell Mountains, opt for a pedal along the St. Mary Lake Road. After 18km, you’ll be rewarded by arriving at the shores of St. Mary Lake and the St. Mary River. While here, keep an eye out for Black-capped Chickadee and Pileated Woodpecker along the shoreline, or try and spot various trout species in the waters After a day spent on two wheels, keep the good times spinning with dinner at the Pedal & Tap . This bike-themed restaurant marries elevated pub-grub with local ingredients and signature cocktails and is a popular spot to mingle with locals and travellers alike. Looking to celebrate a successful trip here with a nightcap? Head for casual beers at one of our two beloved breweries, or enjoy a cocktail at our local distillery, Bohemian Spirits Eager for some more springtime fun? If 3 days here don’t feel quite long enough, tack on a few extra days to enjoy our thawing waterways, take in more of our downtown delights, or partake in early-season swings on our 3 championship golf courses. For the Birds: A Guide to the Best Birding in Kimberley With plenty of sunshine, a moderate climate, and many lakes, rivers and streams to enjoy, Kimberley is a good place to be for bird species and bird-watchers alike. Come in the warmer months to take in the cacophony of birds that call our forests, our waterways and our meadows home. Or, come in the colder months to view the many different species of birds that choose to winter here. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, any birder or budding ornithologist is sure to soar into plenty of feathered fun. Psstt… be sure to bring your binoculars, and don’t forget to look up. The BC Bird Trail You’ve likely heard about the Powder Highway and the BC Ale Trail , but have you heard about the BC Bird Trail ? The BC Bird Trail is a celebration of the expansive bird-watching opportunities in British Columbia, and a guide to discovering birding, conservation, and community within BC. Proudly a part of the Columbia Valley BC Bird Trail, Kimberley is a bird-watcher’s mecca, with over 100 different species of birds and year-round opportunities to bird-watch and make memories. Birding can be done at one of our 3 established trail networks or at the Marysville Falls & Eco Park. Species you can expect to see here include everything from blue jays and song sparrows, to house finches and american robins. Tip: For more information on the BC Bird Trail, be sure to check out their website . There, you can learn more about the BC Bird Trail initiative, and dive a little deeper into the bird-watching magic that can be found along the Columbia Valley Bird Trail. The Birds of the Kimberley Nature Park Here in Kimberley, we’re home to the largest urban park in British Columbia, which boasts over 800 hectares of forested land on the eastern slopes of the Purcell Mountains. The Kimberley Nature Park is home to 97 different species of birds, and acts as the perfect year-round basecamp for birders to enjoy. Of the 97 species of birds that call the Nature Park home, approximately 25 bird species reside here year-round. Birds to view in the winter here include woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, grouse, grosbeaks, and crossbills. Our spring and summer birds tend to begin their migration back to town in late March, with the arrival of the varied thrush and the winter wren. Later on in April, ruby-crowned kinglets and sapsuckers add their distinctive rhythms to the soundtrack of the Nature Park, while warblers and mallards also opt to join the party. By late May, our last migrant from South America, the swainson's thrush, add their own flute-like songs to the park. With over 50km of established trails to wander, the Kimberley Nature Park is a great place to start any birding adventure. Off the Beaten Bird Path For those looking to get off the beaten trail, Kimberley’s waterways and further-out birding areas offer a diversity of bird species and landscapes alike. For the perfect further-out birding itinerary, start your day on the shores of St. Mary Lake and the St. Mary River, 20 km west of Kimberley. Bohemian waxwings, american goldfinch, and black-capped chickadees like to play along the shorelines of both St. Mary Lake and St. Mary River, while keen-eyed birders might be lucky enough to spot the northern pygmy owl or the golden-crowned kinglet in the nearby forests Next, head north out of Kimberley to discover the shores of the Kootenay River and the bird species that frequent the marshy lands there. Expect to see larger, migratory birds and waterfowl here, such as Canada geese, great blue heron, osprey and eagles Following your trip to the Kootenay River, continue along Highway 93/95 to discover the Elizabeth Lake Wildlife Sanctuary at the southwest end of Cranbrook BC. Elizabeth Lake is a 6 hectare wildlife reserve consisting of wetlands, grasslands, a lake and a forest. This area is one of only two known locations in Canada where the dione copper butterfly can be viewed, and is home to many migratory bird species, such as the spotted sandpiper, the horned grebe, and the yellow-headed blackbird The Bird’s the Word As part of the BC Bird Trail, Kimberley is a birders’ true delight. - Bully For You: A “Reely” Good Place to go Fishing | Tourism Kimberley
Bully For You: A “Reely” Good Place to go Fishing Any fisher will tell you that a day on the water is always better than a day in the office. We couldn’t agree more. Here in Kimberley, fishing culture runs deep through our community. With world-class dry fly fishing in the Canadian Rockies and Purcell Mountains, plus enough natural lakes nearby to please trout-trollers and boat-powered anglers, we’re a perfect place to cast away and reel on. Go Guided Kimberley Fly Fishing has a fly shop in town that doubles as a hub for fish chatter and all things angling. With over 25 years of expertise, this crew is made up of in-the-know locals who grew up on our waterways and are dedicated to preserving and sharing the truly special fishing to be had here. Kimberley Fly Fishing offers guided fishing trips on the beautiful surrounding rivers and lakes, such as the crystal-clear freestone waters of the St. Mary River and the historic Kootenay River. Plus, the team at Kimberley Fly Fishing has all the gear needed to tackle the waters and get you hooked on Kimberley’s Cutthroat. Eager to gain a little more fishing know-how? Add a lesson into your guided trip to brush up on your casting technique and learn how to read the water with ease. Wake Up to Wild Bulls Each fall, the fisherfolk here go ‘steer’ crazy. Specifically, they really go ‘bull’ crazy, as the famed Bull Trout splash back into town and reinhabit the local rivers. These migratory fish return each September, and bless the waterways with feisty spirits and trophy sizes that can reach up to or over 30 inches. For the full Bull experience, check out Kimberley Fly Fishing’s overnight camping trips, where guests sleep in wall tents along the shoreline and cast into first light. Nature, water, and wild trout are a powerful combination here. Go on Your Own It’s easy. Pick up your BC Fishing License and any needed fishing supplies at Bavarian Home Hardware in Kimberley’s Platzl. Then, plan for a ‘fish-nic’ by grabbing organic goodies, tasty sandwiches and freshly-baked treats from Stoke Market. Don’t forget to swing by Grist and Mash Brewery or Overtime Beer Works for a growler or bottled samples of their finest brews, and put them on ice while you’re at it. These will come in handy after a long day on the water. Our suggestion for easy fishing access? Head South to St. Mary’s Lake Road, turn into the Kimberley Riverside Campground and follow the road down to the river for fly-fishing and river-wading on the St. Mary River. Or, head 17km North out of town and make a left turn off the highway to enjoy easy trout-trolling on Hahas Lake. Rules for the Reels As with every wet endeavour, caution is needed when navigating through our waterways. The rocks along our rivers can be very slippery, and currents move quickly during the spring freshet. Take your time to show respect to Kimberley’s waters by practicing leave-no-trace principles, and ensure that you’re up-to-date on all the local fishing regulations . Come to discover West Slope Cutthroat and wily Bull Trout on our rivers, then stay a little longer to reel in trophy Pennask Rainbow Trout on our many lakes. Looking to fish year-round? Come back to enjoy ice fishing and cool casts in the wintertime. In addition to offering daily and multi-day trips on Kimberley waterways in the warmer months, Kimberley Fly Fishing also offers guided lake ice-fishing tours through the chillier months. Built in the 1970s by Bill Spence and Dick Bova, the Happy Hans Cuckoo Clock was constructed as a labour of love to help set Kimberley apart. While we’ve since shed our Bavarian ways, we still like to have a laugh, share a past memory, and clink beer steins with our beloved mascot, Happy Hans, every now and then. Put a toonie in the Clock to catch a glimpse of Mr. Happy Hans himself Kimberley Heritage Museum. This non-profit Museum is located on the top floor of the Kimberley Public Library and showcases local stories, historical artifacts, and a rotating feature exhibit. With over 10,000 artifacts and over 11,000 historical pictures, the Kimberley Heritage Museum is a must-see for any visitor. A small fee is required to enter the Heritage Museum, with all admissions helping to support the Kimberley District Heritage Society The Kimberley Veteran Memorial Park. What once was a former gas station, has now been converted into a beautiful green space that commemorates our veterans and their participation in the World Wars and peacekeeping missions. The Kimberley Veteran Memorial Park came to fruition in 2017 and has become a centrepiece in the community. This is a place to pause during your tour, have a seat, and soak up a little silence before reentering our vibrant Platzl Mark Creek. Mark Creek flows right alongside our downtown core and adds some scenic beauty to our surroundings all throughout the year. Work began in 2012 to rehabilitate and naturalize the Mark Creek channel, and this town waterway has now become a favourite feature to gaze upon for locals and visitors alike Bonus. Just outside of the Platzl you’ll also find favourite attractions like Kimberley’s Underground Mining Railway, Kootenay Rafting Co. and Kimberley Fly Fishing. These 3 activity providers deliver unique and memorable experiences that make any vacation here extra special and full of fun Note: You may have noticed the impressive, wooden footbridges along the creek. These bridges were crafted by local builders Tyee Homes. In 2014, Kimberley was honoured with a Community Recognition Award, which recognizes exemplary advocacy for wood use in public structures Further Out While we love our Platzl, and recommend a visit to everyone who comes here, our downtown core isn’t all we’ve got, folks! Step a little further away from the Platzl to soak up all of the different flavours of Kimberley. From the Lois Creek Trail Network in Townsite, to the yoga-posing and craft-butchering streets of Marysville, to the picturesque views enjoyed near our Ski Hill, our neighbourhoods each offer a unique charm to all who visit.
